THE RIGHT LOCATION
The 5M location has all the right ingredients for diversity and density. Currently, the site is underutilized because more than half of it includes parking lots that cut off a natural flow of the pedestrian traffic that supports community and local business. By building a highly networked, open environment at 5M, we will stitch together several local neighborhoods and cultures: SoMa, Yerba Buena, the Tenderloin and 6th Street, Mid-Market, Union Square, Civic Center and the Financial District.
We will activate the streets and alleyways, increase pedestrian safety, drive local economic growth, and connect diverse groups of people. Public transportation for thousands more people around 5M will be easy with several bus lines, BART, Caltrain, MUNI, and trolleys all within walking distance. We will add more affordable housing to the area, increasing what is already the densest grouping of affordable housing in the city. This will foster a broad range of residents participating in the growing culture of the area.
